Blagaj Bosnia and Herzegovina

Blagaj is a village-town in the southeastern region of the Mostar basin, in the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It lies at the edge of the Bišće plain and is one of the most valuable mixed urban–rural ensembles in the country, notable for its distinctive urban layout. The name Blagaj most likely comes from its mild weather, as blaga in Serbo-Croatian means “mild.” Blagaj is located at the source of the Buna River and is home to a historic tekke (tekija or Dervish monastery). The Blagaj Tekke, built around 1520 with elements of Ottoman architecture and Mediterranean style, is considered a national monument. It was constructed as a monastery for Dervish orders.
